Where the real waste of time happens
Sit back with your favorite rum drink and read along as Greg and Garrick tell you why, unless you agree completely, your opinion is wrong in every conceivable way.
Let me begin by saying something that should be obvious to anyone with functioning taste buds and a shred of dignity: rum is a gift, and most people are out here treating it like it’s some sort of frat juice. Now, I’m not here to yuck anyone’s yum—but I am here to elevate it.
Enter Coke. Yes, Coca-Cola—the global elixir of civilization. People think it's just sugar water, but those people are wrong, and possibly dangerous. Coke has a beautifully engineered flavor profile: a perfect balance of sweet with just the right kiss of bitterness. That bitterness isn’t an accident—it’s a finely tuned dance of citrus oils, vanilla, cinnamon, caramelized sugar, and an almost imperceptible spicy tartness that lingers just long enough to remind you it’s a sophisticated drink hiding in plain sight. Coke is a bitter soda wearing a sweet cologne.
Now, I know what you’re thinking: "Greg, are you seriously about to justify putting Coke in a beautiful rum?" And to that, I say: only if you do it right. A splash of Coke is not a rum and Coke. It’s not some sloppy bar pour with a lime wedge you found behind the sink. It’s a precision move. A splash—just a whisper of Coke—opens up the rum. It tempers the sweetness, balances the burn, and creates an incredibly elegant, shockingly nuanced two-ingredient cocktail.
Rum and Coke is a good time. But rum with a splash of Coke? That’s a conversation. That’s jazz in a glass. That’s Hemingway with better dental hygiene.
If you’re sipping a decent rum and feel like it’s just a little too round, too sugary, try giving it that bitter kiss. Not too much. Just enough to let the Coke tell the rum, “Hey, you’re not alone anymore.”
And if you still insist it’s all the same? That’s fine. Just don’t come to my tasting night.
Good Rum only needs 2 things
Let’s clear something up right away: if your rum needs help, it’s not worth drinking. You don’t need mixers. You don’t need flair. You don’t need a tiny umbrella that makes you feel like you're on vacation from your taste.
All a good rum needs is a glass and a cube. That’s it. That’s the tweet. The right rum—a real rum—walks into the room already dressed for the occasion. It doesn’t need Coke to cover its flaws or citrus to distract from its insecurities. No. Good rum stands alone.
Now, I’m not saying you shouldn’t experiment or have fun. I’m just saying that once you’ve found the right bottle, all that extra nonsense just gets in the way. A single ice cube—that’s your move. That’s your co-pilot. As it melts, slowly, it opens the rum up, layer by layer, in its own time. Not rushed. Not manipulated. Just allowed to breathe.
Because rum is a conversation, not a TikTok recipe. You let it talk. You listen.
And if it’s not saying anything without a chorus of syrups and soda? Congratulations, you bought the wrong bottle.
Now, if you want to know what I mean, if you want to experience what actual restraint and craftsmanship taste like? Go get yourself a pour of Facundo Paraiso. That’s not a drink—it’s a master class in patience and payoff. Rich, warm, elegant. It doesn’t need to be anything but itself.
So do yourself a favor: stop trying to dress it up. Pour it, cube it, and let it speak.
I’m a big fan of mezcal, but when it comes to a drink that hits just right, you can't beat a classic Bloody Mary. There's something about the savory, spicy flavor that just works — and I always love adding a dash of Dale’s Liquid Seasoning to give it that extra kick. A little secret: I also rim my glass with smoked salt, which I picked up from Pike Place Fish Market in Seattle — it adds an amazing depth of flavor. But here's a fun twist: if you make a Bloody Mary with tequila instead of vodka, you get a Bloody Maria. And if you swap in rum? Well, then you've got yourself a Bloody Pirate! Whether you're enjoying it as a brunch drink or for a late-night hangout, these variations never disappoint.
I’m new to drinking, but not to caring. I was learning about rum even before I could sip it—reading, listening, and yes, building a spreadsheet to track other people’s tasting notes. Mostly Greg and Garrick’s. They had opinions. I had tabs.
I’m still figuring out what I like, but I always take notes. Peach Schnapps Lemonade? New fave. Fuzzy Tauntaun? Absolutely.
Neither has rum. I know. I’m working on it. The spreadsheet’s already got categories ready.
When I’m not drinking? Half Sprite, half lemonade. Kind of like a fizzy lemonade. Reliable. A little sweet, a little bubbly. A fresh classic. Which, honestly? Same. And it slaps.
Everything still tastes a little like burning.
But I’m learning. And still taking notes.”
ROMs are the unsung heroes of gaming, and we treat them like shady black market deals. “Oh no, you downloaded a ROM of a 40-year-old game that’s been out of print since 1988? STRAIGHT TO JAIL,” says the billion-dollar company that won’t even sell it anymore.
Without ROMs, half of gaming history would be lost in a fiery pit of bad remakes and NFT scams. ROMs are preservation, ROMs are love, ROMs are life. Meanwhile, companies hoard their classics like dragons sitting on a pile of dusty cartridges.
Hmm? Oh, you asked about rum? Sorry, I know nothing about that.
Because the only thing better than Rum, is arguing about it
We love rum. All of it. Light, dark, spiced, weirdly aged in a shoe—bring it on. Sure, other rum snobs (yes, we're looking at you) might scoff at our favorites, but guess what? This is our tiki-fueled nerd fest, and we make the rules. Sip happens.

Planetary is the current Rum and Nerdy favorite lineup—and for good reason. With a flavor profile that hits bold without being brash, it’s complex, smooth, and just weird enough to keep us nerds intrigued. Whether sipped neat or with just a whisper of Coke (Greg’s method, obviously), it’s the rum we keep reaching for.
“Bumbu” is an Indonesian word meaning “a blend of spices,” and that’s exactly what this Caribbean rum delivers. With sugarcane sourced from across the region, it tastes like banana foster in a glass. If you’ve ever watched a pirate movie and wondered what their rum might taste like—this is probably it.
Diplomatico is easily one of our all-time favorites. It’s the base of one of the best drinks out there: the Rum Old Fashioned. For the ultimate version, head to Strong Water Tavern at the Sapphire Falls Hotel, Universal Orlando Resort.
Wonderfully intricate, Zacapa delivers honeyed butterscotch, spiced oak, and rich fruit notes—showcasing the complexity of its solar aging process. It’s fantastic neat or with just a splash of Coke. More than a splash, though… and it’s your ass.
One of our go-to sippers, El Dorado blends spirits from legendary stills—the Enmore and Diamond Coffey stills, the Port Mourant double wooden pot still, and the Versailles single wooden pot still. The result? A deep, balanced rum aged in bourbon oak casks that tastes as impressive as it sounds.
